작업노트-벅수시리즈

“아이고 벅수야, 그것도 모르나”경상도 사람들이 흔히 쓰는 말인 즉, 둔하고 어리석은 사람을 비하하여 부르는 말이다.

본디, ‘벅수’(法首)라는 것은,- <‘법’法(진리)의 ‘우두머리’>뜻하며 마을 어귀나 절 입구에 세워서 잡귀를 물리치는 수호신으로 만들어 졌다. 주로 돌로 만들어져 있고 인상이 눈을 부릅뜨고 입을 굳게 다문 다양한 인상들이 해학적이고 재미있다.

 나는 이 벅수를 나의 내면의 상으로 다시 창조하고 싶어졌다. 사람의 모양을 돌을 쌓듯이 적당히 몸통과 얼굴 다리를 구분하여 형상을 만들되 최대한 자연스럽고 해학적인 형상으로 흙에서만 표현 가능한 즉흥적인 선을 만들고 표정 또한 흙의 자유로움을 즉흥적 직심(直心)으로 표현하는 것이다.

Work Notes - Bucksoo Series

“Oh my, Bucksoo, don’t you know that?” This is a common expression used by people in Gyeongsang Province, that is, a derogatory term for a dull and foolish person.

Originally, ‘Bucksoo’ (法首) means <‘leader’ of ‘law’ (truth)> and was created as a guardian deity to ward off evil spirits by being erected at the entrance of a village or a temple. It is mainly made of stone and has various expressions such as glaring eyes and tightly shut mouths, which are humorous and fun.

I wanted to recreate this Bucksoo as my inner image. I appropriately divided the torso, face, and legs to create a human figure like stacking stones, but I created an impromptu line that can only be expressed in clay with the most natural and humorous shape possible, and I also expressed the freedom of clay with an impromptu straight heart.

작품설명: 박제된 MOU

본 작품은 2024년 부산 일산수지작업실에서 진행되었던 "퐁피두의 유령"이란 주제로 전시되었던 작품 중의 일부 이다.

퐁피두 미술분관 설치는 여러 나라에 시도되고 있다. 우리나라에서는 서울 63빌딩에 (주)한화가 2025년에 개관하고, 부산은 오륙도가 바라다 보이는 세계자연 지질공원으로 지정된 이기대의 자연을 파괴하는 토건사업으로 진행되고 있다. 한 국가에 2개의 분관 유치가 아무런 득이 없는 것이 명확해 보이는데도 문화 예술계에 아무런 사전 토론 없이 막대한 로열티를 지불하고 MOU를 비밀리에 체결하였다. 이에 문화의 종속과 사대적 발상에 반대하는 미술인들의 자발적 미술활동으로 참여하게 되었다.

여러 작품의 연작으로 발표된 작품 중 하나인 “박제된 MOU”작품의 구성은 왼쪽 상단의 우스꽝스러운 페르조나와 상반된 개념의 명상하는 인물의 모습의 대비가 주요한 요소로 작용한다. 전반적인 색조는 붉은색과 검은색, 앨로 오커계열의 색면으로 배치되어있다. 이는 다소 의도적으로 밀실의 이미지와 Mou의 각서, 단절된 검은 테두리는 퐁피두의 죽음으로 박제된 것을 보여준다.

이 작품 바탕에 흐르는 구획된 비밀스런 분위기는 바로 이러한 배경이 구체화된 것이다.

작업의 부분에 사용되어진 세라믹 도판은 점토의 가소성을 활용한 자연스러운 변형을 통한 나만의 작업을 바탕으로 제작된 것이다. 이 도판을 부착하여 이질적인 요소는 리페인팅으로 해소 하였고 여러 번의 시행착오를 겪고 나서 만족할 만한 성과를 이루었다.

Description: Stuffed MOU

This work is part of the works exhibited under the theme of "Ghosts of Pompidou" at the Ilsan Suji Studio in Busan in 2024.

The installation of a Pompidou branch art museum is being attempted in many countries. In Korea, Hanwha Corporation will open in 2025 in Seoul's 63 Building, and in Busan, a construction project that destroys the nature of Igidae, which is designated as a World Natural Geopark overlooking Oryukdo Island, is underway. Although it is clear that there is no benefit to having two branches in one country, the MOU was secretly signed without any prior discussion with the cultural and artistic community, paying a huge royalty. Accordingly, artists who oppose cultural subordination and servile thinking participated as voluntary art activities.

The composition of the work "Stuffed MOU," one of the works presented in a series of several works, is mainly composed of the contrast between the comical persona on the upper left and the figure of a meditating figure with a contrasting concept. The overall color tone is arranged in red, black, and aloe ochre series of colors. This is somewhat intentional, showing the image of a closed room and Mou's memorandum, and the disconnected black border showing the stuffing of Pompidou's death.

The compartmentalized and secretive atmosphere flowing in the background of this work is the embodiment of this background.

The ceramic plate used in part of the work was created based on my own work through natural transformation utilizing the plasticity of clay. By attaching this plate, I resolved the heterogeneous elements through repainting, and after many trials and errors, I achieved satisfactory results.
