Author's note 

이 초상화는 가자 지구에서 다친 아이의 모습입니다. 가자 지구 가족들의 힘든 상황을 상징하기 위해 두껍고 거친 물감을 사용하여 그렸습니다. 언뜻 보기에는 다소 거칠고 못생겨 보일 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 대량 학살은 추악하기 때문입니다. 하지만 이 순진한 아이에게서 느꼈던 타고난 아름다움이 이 작품의 더 큰 힘이 되기를 바랍니다. 그래서 "아이들은 아름답지만, 대량 학살은 추악하다"라는 중요한 제목이 붙었습니다. 

This portrait is of an injured child in Gaza. I painted it with thick,rough paint to symbolize the rough circumstance for the families in Gaza . At first glance it may look a little coarse or ugly because genocide is ugly, but I hope the innate beauty I felt of this innocent child is the more dominant affect of the piece. Hence the important title: “ children are beautiful, genocide is ugly”.

Artist introduction 

Jennifer Hereth

 Jennifer Hereth has had over 50 exhibitions during her career in galleries and museums across the hemisphere. She had taught drawing and painting for 40 years first at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she also co-ran their Mexico Program in San Miguel de Allende and co-directed Oxbow Summer School of Art, in Saugatuck, Michigan and then became a Professor of Art at The College of DuPage in Glen Ellen, IL. She retired in 2019. Jennifer Hereth was a Visiting Lecturer in Art as Meditation for the University of Creation and Spirituality, Oakland, Ca. and at McCormick Seminary and Lutheran School of Theology at The University of Chicago, 2014, 2015.

The recipient of many grants including The Kellogg Foundation Grant for International Studies, Global Initiative Grant, Kiev, Ukraine 2017, Illinois Consortium for International Studies, teacher exchange to Xian University, China, 2014, Niagara Foundation Grant to Turkey, 2013, Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Adele Wheeler Woman of Distinction Award, 2013.
